SUMMARY:Dubai Design Week 2024
DESCRIPTION:Dubai Design Week is the largest design festival in the Middle East\, taking place since 2015. It aims to promote the region’s talents through design. \nLike many design weeks around the world\, Dubai Design Week includes installations\, exhibitions\, lectures\, workshops\, a marketplace\, and the leading contemporary design fair\, Downtown Design. Dubai Design Week is under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum\, Chairman of Dubai Culture\, in collaboration with Dubai Design District (d3)\, and with the support of Dubai Culture. \nDiscover Milan Design Week 2024 \n2023\, Dubai Design Week  \nDubai Design Week 2024: tenth edition\nThe tenth edition is from November 5th to 10th\, 2024\, in the Dubai Design District (d3). Dubai Design Week 2024 underscores its decade-long cultural and economic impact on the $26 billion GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) design industry (Interior and Furniture Market). Its “seniority” also makes it the leading design event in the Middle East. The 2024 edition features over 500 well-known or emerging designers\, brands and creative leaders from over 40 countries. \nDiscover Bangkok Design Week 2024 \n2023\, Dubai Design Week  \nFueled by the rapid urbanization and diversification of the economy\, with the rapidly growing population of tourists and residents\, Dubai Design Week has evolved since 2015 to become a major international design event. Its success comes from many factors. Undoubtedly\, support for local talent has played an important role\, helping to develop a platform for local and international design. \nHighlights at Dubai Design Week 2024\nOne of the main event of this edition is Downtown Design\, the Middle East’s premier design fair\, taking place November 6th to 9th on the d3 Waterfront Terrace. \nAlso in 2024 takes place Editions\, the region’s first limited edition art and design fair. Editions hosts more than 50 galleries\, collectives\, and design studios. \nDowntown Design 2021 \nThe Urban Commissions competition\nDubai Design Week’s annual design competition\, Urban Commissions\, returns this year with the theme “Tawila\,” which means “table” in Arabic. The competition invites designers and architects to explore the table beyond its form as a facilitator of common exchanges and experiences. The winner for 2024 is Altqadum\, an architecture and interior design firm from Oman. Inspired by the musical culture of the Gulf\, where communities traditionally gather around and accompany musicians\, TukTuKDum is an innovative table encouraging interaction with the audience. \nThe Abwab program\nAbwab\, which means “doors” in Arabic\, is a program that supports designers in the Southwest Asia and North Africa (SWANA) region. Each year\, Abwab commissions installations or pavilions dedicated to relevant global and regional contexts. Since 2015\, more than 180 designers from countries such as Algeria\, Bahrain\, Egypt\, India\, Iraq\, Jordan\, Kuwait\, Lebanon\, Morocco\, Pakistan\, Palestine\, Saudi Arabia\, Tunisia\, and the United Arab Emirates have participated in Abwab. For the 2024 edition\, professionals were invited to propose projects on vernacular architecture. The project also explores how architecture using local materials and techniques can interact with new environments. \nDiscover the Clerkenwell Design Week in London \nAbwab 2018 \nAs part of the Abwab program\, the public will see more than 30 projects exploring ancient technologies\, innovation\, and materials. Dubai-based architecture and interior design firm Bone will present a pavilion by prefabricated earth blocks\, created in collaboration with Fetdeterra\, a Spanish company specializing in clay architecture. Japanese architecture firm Mitsubishi Jisho Design invites the public to experience a traditional teahouse made from 3D-printed waste sawdust. Multidisciplinary technology studio DEOND\, founded by Ross Lovegrove and Ila Colombo\, explores the notion of phytotherapy\, with a “second skin” fabric infused with artificial intelligence that responds to the body’s mood. In addition to these\, other installations come from various organic and recycled materials\, including banana fiber\, soy wax\, henna\, Himalayan salt\, terracotta\, and scrap metal. \nWorkshops\, talks\, and master classes\nThe Dubai Design Week workshop program is open to all disciplines of design. The program is run by a range of facilitators\, including lecturers\, designers\, independent makers\, and cultural organizations. \nDubai Design Week also offers a Marketplace on November 9 and 10. The marketplace\, which offers handcrafted products\, is located in the heart of Dubai Design District (d3). \nThe Dubai Design District (d3)\nThe Dubai Design District (d3) is a global creative ecosystem dedicated to design\, fashion\, architecture\, and art. Located in the heart of Dubai\, d3 is a commercial district that houses multi-brand stores\, art galleries\, and showrooms\, as well as architectural and interior design studios. Various events\, such as Dubai Design Week\, Arab Fashion Week\, and Sole DXB\, are part of the Dubai Design District. \nSome of the region’s most popular events take place in d3 and attract international artists and audiences for events such as Dubai Design Week\, Arab Fashion Week\, and Sole DXB. The district also regularly hosts a number of industry conferences\, workshops\, and educational programs for people of all ages. \nWhy Visit\nDubai Design Week is an opportunity to see Dubai up close in a somewhat out-of-the-ordinary guise\, and to understand the exciting path taken by the UAE. Investment in design\, in fact\, carries out research in innovation projected into the future\, alongside the rediscovery of local materials and traditions. Design therefore expresses the desire to rediscover one’s roots\, with objects bearing a solid identity. Local products manage to create emotional bonds\, which foreign design hardly builds. Between Public Projects and Downtown Dubai\, and from this year also Editions\, Dubai Design Week is thus a comprehensive platform\, to follow the evolution of design in this area of the world. \nDubai Design Week\, November 5-10\, 2024\nFor professional and general public\nLocation: Dubai Design District (d3)\nSize: over 500 exhibitors\, 200\,000 visitors\nVisit website DubaiDesignWeek.ae for more info \nSome images from Dubai Design Week 2021\, 2022 and 2023

SUMMARY:The Lake Como Design Festival
DESCRIPTION:From September 15 to 22\, 2024\, the 2024 edition of the Lake Como Design Festival returns to Como. Established in 2018 as the Lake Como Design Fair\, curated by Margherita Ratti\, over the years\, it turned into the Lake Como Design Festival and is now in its sixth edition. Lake Como Design Festival is an annual themed event that develops in Como and around the lake. Exhibitions\, talks and events take place in historical\, unseen\, or somewhat forgotten places in Como city and the area. \nDiscover Milan Design Week  \n9+1 Yuko Sakamoto\, Contemporary Design Selection \nA Festival of design and architecture in Como\nThe festival concept aims to establish an original dialogue between history\, architecture\, design and art. Lake Como Design Festival is conceived and promoted by the association Wonderlake Como. Wonderlake Como creates editorial projects and organizes cultural events to promote Como and the surrounding area in Italy and worldwide.  \nThe Lake Como Festival 2024\nFor 2024\, the Lake Como Design Festival enriches its program with a series of exhibitions and special events in Como\, on the lake shores. The main theme of the 2024 edition is lightness. In the Como city center\, the festival will take place between the Palazzo del Broletto and the church of San Pietro in Atrio. On the other hand\, Villa del Grumello and the other locations within the Chilometro della Conoscenza (Kilometer of Knowledge) will be the stars on the lakefront. In addition\, at Villa Anna in Cernobbio and Borgovico33 in downtown Como\, there will be two special projects by Grieder Contemporary gallery. Finally\, in various locations around the city\, you will find site-specific installations by artist Valerio Eliogabalo Torrisi.  \nDiscover Milan Design Week 2024 \nJorinde Voigt-Grieder Contemporary at Borgovico 33 \nThe main theme: Lightness\n“The theme of lightness\, which we have chosen for this year\, can be declined in countless forms of creativity\,” explains festival artistic director Lorenzo Butti. “Developing exhibitions and special projects that can propose a dialogue between art and design has always been the stylistic hallmark of our program. Every year we strive to propose to our visitors a new way of looking at creativity\, placing the exhibitions in unique architectural contexts\, themselves an integral part of the exhibition itinerary.”  \nLightness in progress at Villa Del Grumello\nWithin the late Renaissance spaces of the Villa Del Grumello\, the Lake Come Design Festival 2024 will host the Lightness in Progress exhibition. It’s a selection of works\, projects\, objects and furnishings from different galleries\, design studios\, and archives on the theme of lightness. The scenic greenhouses and other spectacular sites of the Kilometer of Knowledge will instead host the projects of the Contemporary Design Selection. This is an exhibition dedicated to independent design\, curated by Giovanna Massoni for the second consecutive year. In addition\, in the villa’s ancient dockyard\, there will be the audio/video installation Paesaggi d’acqua (Water Landscapes) by Stefano Larotonda and Niccolò Nessi\, with narration by Giuseppe Innocente.  \nMilan Salone del Mobile \nThe Form of Lightness\nDowntown\, in the Palazzo del Broletto\, is the exhibition The Form of Lightness\, a look at the theme of lightness in more than 100 years of design of a fundamental element of furniture\, the chair.  \nThe 13th-century church of San Pietro in Atrio\, meanwhile\, will host Lightness on Paper\, an exhibition project created to celebrate 35 years of Lithos\, a Como-based publishing house specializing in prints and art books. The exhibition will feature new works created by some of the most well-known and appreciated Italian and international architects\, designers and creatives.  \nAmong the special projects\, a series of site-specific installations by artist Valerio Eliogabalo Torrisi will involve different city entities. Swiss gallery Grieder Contemporary\, on the other hand\, will exhibit 33 works by artist Jorinde Voigt in its Borgovico space. In its new venue at Villa Anna\, in Cernobbio\, it will set up the group exhibition Weight of Illumination.  \nDiscover CIFF Shanghai 2024 \nChilometro della Conoscenza \nContemporary Design Selection\nAt the Lake Como Design Festival 2024\, the Chilometro della Conoscenza (Kilometer of Knowledge) park is hosting the Contemporary Design Selection\, a project curated by Giovanna Massoni for the second year in a row. The participants in this project are: \n9+1 (JP)\, Alice Pilastre (FR / BE) + Mathilde Tinturier (CH) + Andy Farrow (UK/BE)\, Anton Burdakov (UA/DE/UK)\, Atelier Nuanda (IT)\, Atelier Serruys (BE)\, Atelier Versi Linien (FR/IT)\, Biancodichina (IT)\, Caterina Frongia (IT)\, curaa studio (IT)\, Danik Uderbekov (KZ)\, Dora Stanczel (FR) + pietre trovanti (IT)\, ENEI (CH/AR/ES)\, Guto Davies (UK)\, Hana Hillerova (CZ)\, Ilaria Marelli (IT)\, Inessa Hansch (BE/FR)\, Jean- François D’Or (BE)\, JOHY (AT)\, Jonathan Bocca (IT)\, Marie José D’Aprile (IT)\, Marike Andeweg (NL)\, Marino Secco (IT)\, Marta Lavinia Carboni (IT)\, Millim Studio (IT)\, Paulina Herrera Letelier (CL/IT)\, Philippine Aprile Mandillon (FR)\, RAAD Studio (ES)\, Sarah Carestia (BE)\, Sjang Niederwieser (NL)\, Studio Gunther Pfeffer (DE)\, Studiointervallo (IT)\, Studio Khachatryan (ARM/BE)\, Studio Yellowdot (HK/TR)\, Szostak Atelier (PL)\, Temperance by Ilaria Bianchi x Studio Giallo (IT)\, Ye Sul E. Cho (KR/UK/CAN).  \nOn display are a series of objects in dialogue between traditional craftsmanship and technology\, updating techniques and materials in the name of sustainability.  \nThree thematic clusters for contemporary design\nThis thinking turns into three thematic clusters. The first imagines a subtraction of weight\, materials\, processing and structures\, that determine the object’s lightness\, as well as a reduction in weight and impact on the planet. A second cluster is dedicated to agile\, transformable\, foldable\, transportable\, multifunctional and adaptable objects. The third thinks about spaces of light; light is lightness par excellence. In the Serra del Grumello\, inside the park\, there’s a temporary restaurant curated by Michelin-starred chef Samuel Carugati. It’s realized thanks to the partnership with FENIX®\, Pedrali\, Davide Groppi and Acqua Chiarella. The space will be animated by a series of talks with the designers of the Contemporary Design Selection\, powered by ParolaProgetto and moderated by journalist Paolo Ferrarini. \nBelow\, images of Lake Como Design Festival 2023 \n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n\n\n\nWhy Visit\nIn recent years\, Lake Como has been a destination for celebrities who find a home there and offer an image of the area that does not always match the reality. Lake Como Design Festival allows people to discover contemporary design in a highly prestigious historical setting. The festival can be an opportunity to discover an area that invites slow exploration\, with the rhythm of the lake. It’s less hectic than the sea\, and with a relaxed climate. Wonderlake\, the association that organizes the festival\, also offers many other cultural initiatives in different areas to discover the most hidden aspects of Lake Como. \nSeptember is also the best time to stroll among cultural initiatives\, with ideal weather\, neither hot nor cold. \nLake Como Design Festival\, September 15-22\, 2024\nFor professionals and general public\nSize: 7 venues\nDifferent locations\, Como\nVisit LakeComoDesignFestival.com for info \nBelow\, images from Lake Como Design Festival 2022

For the following editions\, see London Design Festival 2025 and London Design Festival 2026\nThe origin of London Design Festival \nIn 2003\, Sir John Sorrell CBE and Ben Evans CBE founded the London Design Festival. Building on London’s existing design activities\, their idea was to create an annual event that would promote the city’s creativity by engaging British design practitioners and thinkers\, to provide a grand celebration of design.  \nAn extraordinary audience in London\nIn 2019\, the Festival welcomed a record 600\,000 visitors from over 75 countries. Now in its 22nd year\, the London Design Festival celebrates its key role in the design industry’s growth. It also strengthens London’s position as a global destination for business\, culture and tourism. It contributes to the UK’s reputation as a center of creative power. As one of the world’s leading design events\, the Festival continues to be a key moment in the cultural calendar. \nDiscover Clerkenwell Design Week in London \nBamboo Ring by Kengo Kuma\, V&A Museum\, London Design Festival 2019 \nThe London Design Festival 2024\nFor 2024\, 14-22 September\, the London Design Festival offers a wide variety of events as always. “Visit Greater Palm Springs” and Nina Tolstrup bring the inimitable mid-century Barbie brand to the Aldwych Strand. This year\, topics of the discussions at the V&A Museum include designing for the human experience\, building healthier cities\, and embracing resilience and repair within our industries. \nAs with 2023\, the London Design Festival partnered with Bloomberg Connects’ mobile guide to make the Festival easier to navigate- an essential tool when there is so much to discover. \nWhy visit\nThe London Design Festival is a wide-ranging project\, offering some specialized sector exhibitions and area-wide projects. The projects\, scattered throughout the city\, also involve the general public\, who are not very design savvy. It’s a chance to visit London\, and to see areas you might not usually go to. Or\, at any rate\, revisit buildings or areas you already know in a different guise.
