Micro-Living Design at Genova Design Week 2026

Ten magenta shipping containers lined up along Calata Mandraccio, in the heart of Genoa’s Porto Antico, became the unexpected protagonists of Genova Design Week 2026. Container 03, an experimental format, drew thousands of visitors throughout the week and confirmed itself as one of the main attractions at Genova Design Week 2026.

Container 03: micro-living under the sky

Curated by Simona Finessi, Container 03 returned for its third edition with a new concept and a new, highly symbolic location. The title chosen for 2026, “Il cielo in una stanza” (The sky in a room) – pays homage to the iconic song by Gino Paoli, a central figure of Genoese culture who recently passed away, and captures the poetic ambition behind the project.

The design brief centered on micro-living, asking a simple question: how can a reduced space become a place where one can enjoy a good quality of life? Ten design teams – deliberately diverse in training, background, generation and vision – were each handed a 20-foot container and challenged to turn its physical limits into a design opportunity. The premise was clear from the start: spatial constraints must never translate into constraints on wellbeing or individual aspiration.

The micro-living home design

The result was an open-air investigation into micro-living design. It’s not the square footage that determines the quality of living, the project argued, but the capacity of design to activate relationships and suggestions. Each container worked as a device for amplifying space through light, material, color and narrative, questioning the traditional idea of the interior as a boundary.  Inside expanded symbolically toward outside, building scenarios of freedom, intimacy and identity.

Micro-living design emerged not as a condition of reduction but as a field of experimentation where density and quality coincide: compact yet intense environments, essential yet deeply expressive.
The container itself – the symbol of transport and global connection – once again proved its worth as a design matrix, shifting from logistics unit to narrative space. The units, now instantly recognizable in their magenta livery, were supplied by Ocean Network Express Italy and moved by Container Fidenza.

A new home at the Porto Antico

Moving Container 03 to the Porto Antico gave the installation the character of an open-air exhibition, accessible and immersed in the Genoa everyday life. The space between the ten containers became an urban “Piazza”, furnished by technical sponsor Unopiù and lit by Martinelli Luce. A tasting corner Nims presented Lavazza’s Tablì system with its 100% coffee Tab. The project management was in the hands of architect Giulia Tubelli.

Big success for Genova Design Week 2026, seventh edition

Besides the “Container” exhibition, Genoa Design Week has matched and surpassed the success of previous editions. Over five days, more than 140 architecture studios and professionals animated the historic center with installations, exhibitions, talks and special projects, continuing the work of urban regeneration that the event began seven years ago and maintaining its distinctive balance between creative research and the production system.

“Genova Design Week has become an increasingly inclusive, dynamic and recognizable event,” said Elisabetta Rossetti, president of DiDe – Distretto del Design di Genova. “It’s not just a design event but a cultural project that over the years has concretely contributed to the urban regeneration of the historic center, encouraging the opening of new creative and commercial activities and making the district a more lived-in, safe and vital place.”

A rich program of talks 

All three dates of the Festival Design Talk sold out, bringing to Genoa some of the most authoritative voices in contemporary architecture. Among the most followed appointments: the talk on the city as a cultural engine of urban processes with architects Sandy Attia and Matteo Scagnol, joined by Paolo Verri, Mattia Palazzi and Francesca Coppola; “Surf and Turf” with Leonardo Cavalli and Francesca Pintus; and the closing lecture by renowned architect Odile Decq, held in collaboration with Cersaie in the Salone delle Grida of the former Stock Exchange.

The 2026 program also introduced F/A FakeAuthentic, an international project on architecture, design and contemporary art hosted in the Santa Maria di Castello complex, and the exhibition Architetture d’Interni in Liguria, which involved 50 architecture studios in telling the story of the Ligurian territory through contemporary interior design.

PuntaSanLorenzo brought a fragment of the Ligurian coastline – beach umbrellas, towels and seaside objects – into the heart of the historic center. A big platform, designed by Caarpa studio, transformed a transit space into a living urban beach.

Designer Under 35

Attention to new generations came through the Designer Under 35 call, curated by architect Laura Palazzini. More than 60 young designers presented unpublished projects on the theme “Equilibrio”, offering a fresh, experimental vision of contemporary design. The winning projects were ROB by Paolo de Castiglioni – which also took home the Genoa Lamp 1954 prize – Opera Plate by Scapes (Litian Studio and Martina Geroni) and Regula by Martina Gobbi, Anna Maria Bobini and Elisa Daminato.
