Over ten years, Design Shanghai has grown into one of the world’s most important design exhibitions, and the most important in China, with 600 exhibitors. The 2024 edition expects about 100,000 visitors. The venue over time has also changed: from 2019 onward, Design Shanghai takes place at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Centre, after five years at the Shanghai Exhibition Centre.

A new hall for new materials
This year, Design Shanghai introduces a thrilling addition, the Hall 4. This new pavilion is a testament to the cutting-edge innovation in the design industry, featuring a range of innovative materials. It perfectly complements the offerings of the three existing pavilions. In the three existing pavilions one can find top brands in furniture and lighting, kitchen, bath & lifestyle. However, the innovative application of materials has always been a core theme in the design industry, so a dedicated hall is welcome. This, Hall 4 is the perfect platform to host the latest materials and application solutions, promising an exciting experience for visitors.

The heart of Design Shanghai 2024 is Hall 3, Living & Lifestyle. This vibrant space brings together leading Chinese and foreign brands, as well as artisans and artists worldwide. Together, they showcase a diverse range of furniture and design products, accessories, textiles, carpets, wallpapers, paints, and even artworks.

International design event in Shanghai
Building on the success of 2023, Hall 3 in 2024 is expanding, to include several European accessory brands. This international collaboration is a testament to the global reach of Design Shanghai. To celebrate the fusion of Eastern and Western design, the trade show also features several brands representing Chinese ceramic culture. These include Jingzhan crystals, Guoci Yongfengyuan banquet porcelain, and Huaqianwu Ceramic Art Studio.

Design Shanghai in Xintiandi
Since 2017, Design Shanghai has also collaborated with Xintiandi, an area in Shanghai, to create the “Design Shanghai Xintiandi Design Festival.” The design festival hosts over one hundred creative installations throughout Xintiandi, thus spreading the power of design worldwide.
The eighth edition of the Design Shanghai Xintiandi Design Festival in 2024 runs from June 5 to 26 and focuses on the theme “Hybrid Playground.” The curators of the 2024 edition are Yan Mi and Simone Chen (senior media), Haijiie Hu and Liu Kai (designers).

The 2024 edition continues to celebrate the meeting of Eastern and Western design. For its ninth edition, the “Rong Casting Design Exhibition” showcases the “Integrated Casting Design Exhibition”, in Hall 4 this year. The Rong Design Library is committed to explore the future of traditional craftmanship. Casting is the ninth research theme of traditional Chinese handicrafts in the “Rong Design Exhibition”. This after bamboo, silk, clay, copper, paper, mortise and tenon, staining and weaving. Forty-six designers and artists from different fields were invited to explore the fusion relationship between technology and contemporary design.
