No wonder, then, that the founders of 100% Design and Design Shanghai saw a new opportunity in Mumbai. Mumbai is a megacity of more than 20,000,000 people, the third largest city in the world in terms of the presence of billionaires. It is India’s commercial and entertainment capital; Mumbai’s economy generates 5 percent of India’s GDP, 25 percent of industrial production, 40 percent of maritime trade, and 70 percent of the country’s capital transactions.

A highly curated exhibition

The idea behind Design Mumbai, then, is a highly curated exhibition with the best that Indian design has to offer, and some very select exhibitors from abroad. The exhibition thus hosts several very established and emerging brands and new talents, from all areas of furniture, from furniture to lighting, kitchens to bathrooms, workspaces and outdoor spaces. Local craftsmanship also includes eco-conscious lighting collections made from natural materials such as brass, bamboo and terracotta, and zero-impact designs using recycled industrial materials.

Among the exhibitors, we can mention some excellent names in high-end design from abroad, including Catellani & Smith, Poltrona Frau, VitrA, De Sede, Technogym, Hästens, and others. Montgomery Group is the UK’s longest-running independent events organizer, with over 50 events and co-locates in 15 countries, including Art Hong Kong, Photo New York, and The India Art Fair, Delhi. The founders of Design Mumbai are Ian Rudge, co-founder of 100% Design and Design Shanghai; Michael Dynan, also co-founder of 100% Design and Design Shanghai; and Piyush Suri, designer, brand owner, event organizer and TV presenter (BBC1, BBC2 & Channel 4).
