From September 5 to 14, along with Maison&Objet, Paris Design Week 2024 is back in Paris. Ten days in which the streets of Paris are full of events related to the world of design and the trade show. Established in 2010, Paris Design Week in 2024 is in its fourteenth edition. Every September, the city comes alive with many events that attract professionals and the general public to discover trends in design and lifestyle.
Discover Maison&Objet September 2024
Created in 2010 by Maison&Objet, Paris Design Week aims to revitalize the city every September, raising awareness among the general public and professionals about the latest trends in the world of design, decoration and the art of living. Paris Design Week is also an opportunity for design lovers to experience Paris in a different light. The temporary installations created by designers, in fact, are open and free to all.
A feature of Paris Design Week, in September 2024, is to highlight artisans and designers; the Paris Design Week Factory is a springboard for emerging talent. Schools, designers and cultural centers, catalysts of talent, come together, to reveal the many expressions of design. Some historical institutions offer their private mansions, which thus become destinations for alternative walks to discover the secret contemporary design in Paris.

The outdoor exhibitions
Design Sur Cours invites designers to design installations in the courtyards and gardens of some of the world’s most important monuments. These exhibitions create creating a dialogue between classical architecture and contemporary design.
Among the various exhibitions will be Eau Fraîche at the Hôtel de Soubise, an installation by designer Lucas Huillet and perfumer Alexandre Helwani. British designer Paul Cocksedge, on the other hand, creates reflections in mirrors, at the Orangerie and in the gardens of the Hôtel de Sully at Place des Vosges. In the lower courtyard of the Bibliothèque Historique de la Ville de Paris, the wood industry FIBOIS presents the Bois Français & Design 2024 competition winners, with canopies, benches, and compost bins. In the upper courtyard Jean-Baptiste Durand, Prisca Razafindrakoto and Simon Geringer present their contemporary version of a village square. The goal is to design street furniture adapted to climate change.

Graphisme à ciel ouvert – graphic projects in the open air
The Paris Bureau du Design, de la Mode et des Métiers d’Art, with the Écrire la Ville association led by graphic designer Silvia Dore, in collaboration with Paris Design Week, organizes an exhibition in the former Caserne des Minimes. The walls of the courtyard host an exhibition of graphic design, as well as a collaborative textile art installation designed by the Société Choletaise de Fabrication (SCF), which has its headquarters here. Artist Anaïs Beaulieu invites citizens to create a collective work of “urban embroidery” using waste materials made available by the SCF. Graphisme à ciel ouvert also sees the participation of several graphic arts libraries, including Eyrolles, in the Latin Quarter.

Hôtel de la Marine: Uchronia and Pierre Renart
The Uchronia studio displays a four-poster bed in the central courtyard, as an ode to the Hôtel de la Marine, a former royal furniture depot. Standing as tall as an acropolis on a ceramic platform, it transforms the installation into a public square. The ceramic tiles, produced by the Dutch brand Palet, pick up the colors of the quarters’ dwellings: the red of Pierre-Élisabeth de Fontanieu’s bedroom and the turquoise blue of the physics cabinet. Atop its pedestal, the XXL ceremonial bed sports an exuberant array of drapery and pillows. Cabinetmaker Pierre Renart, meanwhile, presents an original work here with the Maison Parisienne gallery. Inspired by the theme of travel, he has taken up the headquarters courtyard and its 18th-century architecture with Escale, a wraparound hammock made of wooden slats.

Why visit
Design Weeks can become alternative tourism destinations for those who appreciate design events. Paris Design Week, for example, is an opportunity to see places and areas off the usual paths. In general, these are nice areas, with beautiful buildings, historic mansions, furniture and decoration showrooms, areas where it is also lovely to walk around, and where you can also find fewer tourists. Plus, one can see beautiful, original objects and decorations and make interesting purchases.
