The third edition of Pietrasanta Design Week-end runs in Pietrasanta, Tuscany, from September 26 to 29, 2024. 

The 2024 edition of Pietrasanta Design Week-end, an initiative founded by Paola Silva Coronel, takes place over three days, with a rich program of exhibitions, installations and talks. 

The common thread of this edition is the hallmark. That is, an invitation to brands and designers to show and tell themselves through their cultural background, emphasizing the difference that distinguishes artistic production from industrial production.

Speaking of industrial production and design, an unprecedented duo, Giulio Cappellini and Giulio Iacchetti, arrives at the Church of Saint Augustine to stage the Versilia of all time. “Abitiamo alla marinara (We live seafaring-style)” tells the design of yesterday and today through four islands + 1 dedicated to life on the beach, from relaxation to sports, food, and play. The +1 island is dedicated to a new outdoor furniture collection, designed by Giulio Iacchetti for Ezio Foppa Pedretti and presented here exclusively.

Design in Tuscany

Between art and design, two of the contents on display inside the Cloister unfold. The Sala dei Putti hosts a photography exhibition curated by Alberto Mattia Martini with shots by max&douglas, whose title is “Inside Artist.” The collection of artists’ portraits premiers in Pietrasanta. In the Sala del Capitolo, a painter, Pilar Saltini, signs canvases that become the setting for an installation of Kartell products, curated by FABRIC. In a dialogue between art and design, the visitor’s gaze travels into the infinite space of the polychrome canvases, starting from the shapes and colors typical of the Kartell universe.

Architecture and design in magical Versilia

In the Chiostro di Sant’Agostino (Cloister of St. Augustine), between the arcade and the gardens, is an installation by GBPA Architects for Medit, with lamps by Dixpari. In Duomo Square, a green installation by Silvia Ghirelli and Giuseppe Tortato Architetti for Kindof and VilleGiardini magazine is back.

Also outside the Complex, in the magical quadrilateral of the Giardino della Lumaca (Snail Garden), 967Arch rethinks the green space by staging an open-air lounge signed FIM/CORO, with the green touch of Silvia Ghirelli, a land artist who already signed one of the most appreciated installations last year.

Design by the beach in Forte dei Marmi

From the Apuan Alps, the gaze and thoughts run to the sea, where Design Week-end pushes on for the first time, animating one of Forte dei Marmi’s historic beach resorts. Here again, outdoor beach furniture finds its natural habitat, inviting the Design Week-end audience to discover the tradition of Versilia and the anticipation of the next stage. Here, in fact, is a glimpse of CourmaBeach, the beach on the snow, which was a success in February in Courmayeur. 

On the long and wonderful beach, one of the most goliardic moments of this new edition will be the tournament of marbles, customized with the faces of the designers, instead of the historical cyclists. Studio Giuseppe Tortato Architetti joins the technological skills of WIP Work in Progress to create jumps and parabolics. There is also no shortage of special effects with augmented reality, thanks to the skill and imagination of DOS Design Open Spaces. Like every year and every edition, the sports/goliardic fractions are always captained by Cardex, the leading partner again on this occasion, with Sedus.

Between Friday and Saturday, there is also the second edition of sailingCAD, the sailing regatta for architects and designers, which this year opts for the match-race mode, with direct elimination trials. 

The agenda also consists of several talks, scheduled from Friday to Sunday, with two appointments daily, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. 

A high value design program

ADI – Associazione per il Disegno Industriale (Industrial Design Association) and Altagamma, with their patronage, confirm the high value of the content and program of this small event, which year after year is establishing itself among the events with a higher following.

“The year 2024 closes at its best, bringing three editions to a close “-the comment of Paola Coronel, creator, and organizer of the event-” For the first time we have put on the calendar three appointments bringing design from north to south, from Valle d’Aosta to Puglia, to Tuscany. The February edition in Courmayeur was very well received, in fact it will return in February 2025, from the 6th to the 9th. The credit for this result should be equally divided between the brands, which recognize in our appointment a real opportunity to network and do business, the Ministry of Tourism, the municipal administrations, which believe in this project, and the Design Week-end Circle, which grows from edition to edition in bringing culture and innovation.”
