Heimtextil 2025: a big success

It’s always been said that design is a process rather than a product. Heimtextil 2025 embraced this idea by enlisting Patricia Urquiola and Alcova to explore the connection between design and textiles. Patricia Urquiola named her project for Heimtextil 2025 “Among Us.” She created an enchanted living room that served as more than just an installation—it became a convivial space where people could experience technology and craftsmanship embodied in fabric up close. Aquafils, CC Tapis, Cimento, Kettal, Kvadrat, and Moroso collaborated on the area, showcasing the full potential of contemporary textiles as hybrid surfaces combining digital technology with exceptional craftsmanship.

The Patricia Urquiola vision

Patricia Urquiola explained her vision: “This installation brings together technology and craftsmanship, digital and manual processes, to ‘play’ with fabric and push the boundaries of combining natural and recycled fibers.” The hanging carpets effectively demonstrated how Econyl, a recycled nylon fiber, can transform into soft wool. This was just one example of the extensive research driving the installation.
Urquiola designed the “Among Us” lounge as a space for relaxation, surrounded by diverse textiles across floors, walls, and furniture. Carpets, rugs, tapestries, sofas, and partitions blended artisanal techniques with industrial processing.

“I approached this installation with as much creative freedom as possible,” said Urquiola, “but I kept the perspective of a designer, not an artist. Usually, I design for industrial production, which requires careful attention to factors affecting large-scale manufacturing. For this project, I focused more on research, collaborating closely with companies and artisans.” Some pieces were crafted in India and shipped, while others were created locally.

Urquiola described how she enjoyed being present during the tapestry-making process and working with Moroso to develop upholstered pieces in new, specially created colors. For the flooring, the team explored innovative techniques, with one section of the floor designed to be walked on without shoes. “Additionally,” Urquiola added, “the entire installation can be reused for future exhibitions and installations later this year.”
