From Surrealism to Sur/reality

The central theme of Maison&Objet 2025, taking place January 16-20, is Sur/reality, where Maison&Objet collaborates with Peclers Paris to delve into the resurgence of Surrealism. In its 100th anniversary, Surrealism continues to inspire and fuel creative expression. This theme celebrates the legacy of iconic figures like Magritte and Dalí, whose unique aesthetics have become universal symbols, while firmly grounding the exploration in today’s contemporary context.

A New Design Code

Philippe Starck, a trained pataphysicist, highlighted the creative potential of pataphysics—a Surrealist-admired “science of imaginary solutions”— during a Paris exhibition. Questions like “What if the Seine were a lake?” inspire urban reimaginations by distorting reality and uniting opposites. This playful defiance of logic fosters innovative design languages. Brands like Seletti embrace Surrealist traditions, weaving provocation and poetry into their work. The Attic-Window Lamp resembles a window opening onto a blue sky; it’s a clear homage to René Magritte’s influence.

Sur/realism Meets Digital Innovation

How does 21st-century technology reinterpret Surrealist methods like automatic writing and dream exploration? Techniques akin to the Surrealists’ “thought dictation without rational control” echo in tools like MidJourney, where endless image combinations unlock unexpected creativity. This digital form of automatic writing challenges perceptions of reality and reshapes familiar constructs. Pilar Zeta, an artist and graphic designer, transitions virtual designs into tangible art that transforms living spaces.

Sur/reality in Hospitality

In hospitality, Sur/Reality blends surprise with eclectic influences, embracing a rebellious artistic approach where luxury defies logic. At Maison&Objet, Turkish brand Kaimakk crafts whimsical environments with futuristic confections and trompe-l’œil designs, such as a candy fountain mimicking splashing water. At London’s Café Prada, ornate mouldings juxtapose with a striking black-and-white chessboard floor, creating an ambiance that oscillates between Romanticism and fantasy.
