The Manufacture installation
Who created the chair you’re sitting in right now? Who designed it, who made it? With which materials? These are the questions Faye Toogood invites visitors to explore in Manufracture.
“To ensure furniture has a future, we must repair the fractures in our maker’s chain. We must take pride in the process. Pursuing quality should not merely be a path to profit,” says Faye Toogood.
The installation highlights every step in the maker’s journey, delving into the intricate, symbiotic relationship between artist and artisan. Toogood opens her personal archive of maquettes, sharing her creative process.
“I decided to bring pieces from my personal archive to the Stockholm Furniture Fair. It’s like opening my cabinet and sharing my processes and works. It feels vulnerable. There are unfinished projects, some that didn’t work, and others that I still hope for in the future. But right now, sharing them feels crucial,” says Toogood. “From humble, sometimes fragile models crafted from masking tape and spare cardboard pieces, furniture collections emerge, often involving a hundred different highly skilled individuals. My respect for the makers drives my commitment to imbue emotion into the work, making it meaningful,” she continues.

A fractured process
Toogood chose the name Manufracture because she believes that the process of creation today is broken. The way we manufacture and transport products globally is problematic.
“The biggest challenge for furniture designers today is that we live in a world overwhelmed with design and objects. Do we really need new things? Probably not. As designers, we need to understand our role in the future, and I believe that role is to create objects that truly connect with people” she explains.
Designing by Making
Toogood’s latest furniture collection, Assemblage 8, which includes the Gummy (upholstered seating) and Palette (wooden tables), reflects the principles behind Manufracture. The Gummy Armchair is her first upholstered piece. Although she has longed to create upholstered furniture, it took years of building relationships with the right makers to bring this design to life. Gummy is the culmination of that journey. It’s crafted locally using traditional techniques and sustainable materials such as coconut husk and wool.
Toogood has recently worked with design brands like Poltrona Frau, Tacchini, cc-tapis, Vaarnii, and Hem, among others. Her London-based studio, founded in 2008, bridges design, art, and fashion, blending deep respect for craftsmanship with a playful, intuitive approach.
