Market analysis and insights from Heimtextil, the world’s leading trade fair for home and contract textiles, confirm a clear industry shift: fabrics are once again at the center of furniture and interior design, in both residential and contract sectors. Beyond traditional upholstery, textiles now play a strategic role in hospitality and high-traffic environments such as hotels, restaurants, lounges, offices, and public spaces.

Today, fabrics are key to the overall user experience. They help define atmosphere, comfort, and brand identity while improving environmental quality. Curtains, upholstery, wall coverings, and acoustic textiles influence visual perception, tactile comfort, and sound control. New technologies further expand their role, introducing functional finishes and fragrance solutions that enhance wellbeing and sensory impact.

A growing and global textile market

The renewed importance of textiles is reflected in strong market performance. The global home furnishings and textile sector is growing at an estimated annual rate of 5% to 7%. Growth is driven by urbanization, higher disposable income, and increasing attention to living quality, comfort, and the design of shared spaces. At the same time, demand for durability, sustainability, and performance is reshaping product development and supply strategies.

The industry is also becoming increasingly international. Heimtextil 2026 (Frankfurt, January 13–16) brought together leading manufacturers and buyers from around the world. The top exhibiting countries included China, India, Pakistan, Turkey, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. Visitors reached an international share of 86%, with strong growth from the United States, Switzerland, Denmark, Finland, and Peru.

Decision-making power was a key feature of the event: 78% of attendees were senior decision-makers. The presence of executives from global companies such as Harrods, IKEA, Marriott Hotels, Sainsbury’s, and XXXLutz confirms Heimtextil’s role as a strategic platform for sourcing, networking, and market insight.

Interior design and hospitality as key growth drivers

According to Heimtextil’s Interior.Architecture.Hospitality program, demand for technical and performance fabrics for contract applications continues to grow. Hospitality, offices, retail environments, and public spaces increasingly rely on textiles to improve comfort, acoustics, safety, and design flexibility.

This trend is opening new opportunities for architects, interior designers, developers, and procurement professionals. Textiles enable more integrated, experience-driven environments while supporting operational performance in high-use settings. Starting in 2027, Heimtextil will further strengthen this focus through a collaboration with Hospitality Interiors Europe (HINT), expanding solutions for global hospitality and interior design projects.

Design as a driver of textile innovation

Design is becoming a key competitive factor in the textile industry. Heimtextil highlights innovation across materials, processes, and creative approaches, bringing together advanced manufacturers, emerging designers, and research initiatives focused on sustainability and circular production.

Among the most notable projects at Heimtextil 2026 was “Craft is a verb”, curated by Alcova. The exhibition identified emerging trends and demonstrated how traditional craftsmanship, advanced manufacturing, and AI-supported design processes are increasingly interconnected.

Some images from “Craft is a verb” exhibition

The installation “among all,” curated by Patricia Urquiola, explored experimental applications of textile innovation. Highlights included robotufted carpets made with ECONYL regenerated yarn, surfaces created from production waste, and bio-based materials such as Ohoskin, derived from Sicilian orange by-products. The project showcased how circular thinking and cross-industry technologies are expanding the possibilities of textile design.

Artificial Intelligence: a new business enabler

Heimtextil 2026 also emphasized the growing role of artificial intelligence under the theme “Texpertise Focus AI.” AI is becoming an operational tool across the textile value chain, supporting both creativity and efficiency.

Today, AI is used for pattern generation, color development, and realistic material visualization. At the same time, it helps companies manage data, streamline workflows, optimize supply chains, and deliver more personalized customer experiences. As market dynamics accelerate, AI is emerging as a key factor in improving responsiveness, productivity, and competitiveness.

With its international reach and strong focus on innovation, Heimtextil confirms its position as the leading global platform for understanding trends, sourcing advanced materials, and shaping the future of home and contract textiles.

The Salone del Mobile in Milan presented the second edition of its Report on Milan Design Week. The research was carried out by the Salone in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano. The University also deployed, among other resources, field observation, thanks to the involvement of 100 students from the Politecnico di Milano’s Schools of Design and Architecture.
A large section is of course dedicated to the Salone del Mobile.Milano, but the research also devotes considerable space to side events, which make the biggest Design Show in the world.

The impact of Milan Design Week on the city of Milan

The Report is a very thorough piece of work, which allows for an assessment of the actual impact of Milan Design Week on the city, analyzing traffic flows, events, and cultural production. It provides interesting insights for a wide range of activities. The report provides a fairly accurate picture of how many visitors arrive in Milan, how they travel to the Fair, and how they get around the city. It also provides information on the age and interests of Milan Design Week tourists.

Milan Design Week 2025 events

The Politecnico survey provides a quantitative and qualitative overview of the distribution of events. The results offer a series of insights that can be very useful for anyone planning to organize an event at the Fuorisalone in Milan.
According to the report, in 2025, the City of Milan declared a number of 1,667 Fuorisalone events (the number varies depending on who conducted the census; this is the total number from the City of Milan’s program). The events listed on the Fuorisalone.it website, on the other hand, numbered 1,067.
Compared to 2024, this represents an increase of 25.7%; to get an idea of the increase over the years, the events declared by the Municipality of Milan in 2019 were 986, 650 in 2021, 825 in 2022, 1,200 in 2023, and 1,326 in 2024.

The areas with the highest density of events

Thanks to an analysis carried out using Fastweb-Vodafone data (mobile network operators), the Salone Report provides an overview of traffic flows to the design districts, as well as the presence of Italians and foreigners.
In 2025, the Brera Design District (257 events) recorded a 51.9% increase in foot traffic. The Porta Genova area – the gateway to the Via Tortona area – grew by 41.3%, while Parco Sempione – the Triennale area – recorded a +25.4% increase.

In the Sarpi area, home to the ADI Design Museum and Fabbrica del Vapore, foot traffic increased by 12.2%, while Corso Magenta and Via San Vittore – in the 5VIE district – saw an increase of 9.6%. (5VIE is the name of an intersection of five narrow streets between Piazza Cordusio and Corso Magenta, so part of the traffic in the Duomo area is also involved. Although not directly involved in Milan Design Week, the Duomo area recorded an increase of 19.3%.)

The areas Porta Garibaldi – Porta Nuova (+16.2%), Buenos Aires – Porta Venezia – Porta Monforte (+7.9%), and Stazione Centrale – Ponte Seveso (+7.4%) host Milan Design Week events, but they are also areas of daily commuting, so traffic here is only amplified, not overloaded.

The further out you go towards the suburbs, the less traffic increases. Villapizzone – Cagnola – Bovisasca (Certosa District) saw an increase of 2.3%; Stadera – Chiesa Rossa – Quartiere Torretta – Conca Fallata (Stadera Design District_SDD recorded an increase of 2.8%.

The detailed map

The catalyst events

There was a very significant increase in traffic flows in some areas of the Milan City Council’s events program, which considers journeys within a 500-meter radius of the event. The areas are Interni-Università degli Studi, DDDesign (Durini Design District), Mosca Partners – Design Variations (Palazzo Litta), Alcova (Varedo), as well as the areas of Tortona and 5VIE; here, 323 events in total. The average growth in traffic flows varied between +20% and +50%, with peaks of 49.2% for the Interni event and +48% for DDDesign (Durini Design District).

Analysis of foreign SIM cards shows that the foreign presence at Alcova events is overwhelmingly in the majority.
The data also allows us to establish the urban and social nature of Milan Design Week (not just the Salone del Mobile, therefore). The highest volume of users is concentrated between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m., but the 8 p.m. to midnight slot still accounts for a quarter of all journeys.

Milan Design Districts: the co-visits during Milan Design Week

The analysis of co-visits is also interesting. The graphs represent the co-visit flows between the Design Week Districts in the city during the Salone del Mobile 2025, highlighting some relevant co-visit patterns, showing the total number of visitors and the percentage breakdown between Italian and foreign visitors. The co-visit maps offer a new insight into the audience’s behavior and mobility, highlighting the spontaneous connections between different districts and events. The values represent cross-flows resulting from successive movements within the same 48-hour period.

The event content distribution

The Report also examined event content in depth, analyzing 781 events in detail. This observation allowed us to determine how many industrial product launches, small-scale productions, interior design projects, new materials, interactive installations and experiences, publishing projects, design technologies, and other kinds of projects there were. Even more interestingly, the research allowed to set the distribution of contents for each area of interest. (see image)

The research carried out by Salone del Mobile with the Milan Polytechnic therefore shows how close the relationship between the Fair, Fuorisalone, and the city of Milan is. In fact, in my book on the History of Fuorisalone, I tried to highlight how Fuorisalone changed as Milan changed. Now it would be time to take a next step, a study of the relationship between residents and the many events, to see how the city has changed with the development of Milan Design Week. All topics of great interest.

The event content distribution

An annual celebration of creativity and innovation: this is the Tallinn Design Festival, which hosted the 20th edition from September 29 to October 5, 2025. The program was notably rich, as usual, including exhibitions, design markets, and conferences, like most city design festivals. In fact, the integration between events and town is a festival feature. The headquarters is in an old industrial district undergoing regeneration, a really fascinating location. Moreover, many showrooms display their latest products. This way, Tallinn experiences the Design Festival as a big town festival, inviting visitors to explore even the most out-of-the-way areas.
The theme of the 2025 Festival was “Design for All”: how design can help equality.

“Be the project” is the theme selected for Fuorisalone 2026, a theme expressing two meanings. On the one hand, people as active agents of change, with visions, desires and responsibilities; on the other, the project, design as a constantly evolving process that shapes and redesigns relationships between people, objects and environments.

In April 2026, Superstudio will launch a new and game-changing format for Milan Design Week 2026. This isn’t just an update – it’s a full transformation. With strong roots in Milan’s creative DNA and more than twenty years of cultural leadership, Superstudio is reimagining how we experience design. The mission is clear: quality, international scope, and forward-looking vision are the core values driving this new chapter.

For the first time, Superstudio will expand across three separate locations, each with its own identity and purpose: Superstudio Più in Tortona, Superstudio Maxi in Barona, and the brand-new Superstudio Village in Bovisa. This three-part approach offers a diverse, immersive, and multidimensional experience. Each space will feature its own curatorial direction, yet all will speak the same design language that defines the Superstudio brand.

Gisella Borioli, founder of Superstudio, with the Mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala

A brief history of Milan Superstudio

Superstudio, the renowned Milan location, was founded by Gisella Borioli and Flavio Lucchini, pioneers in Italian fashion, publishing, and design culture. Their goal was to create spaces where creativity could go beyond traditional boundaries.

It began in 1983 with Superstudio 13 – an innovative hub for fashion photography and communication in southern Milan. It quickly became a go-to place for photographers, designers, and global brands. With high-end studios and full production support, Superstudio 13 helped reshape how fashion and visual storytelling were done in Milan and beyond.

In 2000, the founders opened Superstudio Più in Via Tortona, transforming another former industrial complex into a multidisciplinary cultural center. It welcomed art, design, fashion, and innovation – and soon became the heart of the Fuorisalone (Milan Design Week). Designers who couldn’t join the official Salone del Mobile finally had a platform for bold ideas, helping to create what is now the Tortona Design District.

Superdesign Show at Superstudio Più

Over time, Superstudio Più turned into a major venue for global events, exhibitions, and experimental formats. It has kept its curatorial strength, hosting leading names in design, technology, and contemporary art.

Now, with Superstudio 13, Superstudio Più, Superstudio Maxi, and Superstudio Village, a powerful network is shaping Milan’s creative future. With a legacy built on innovation and openness, Superstudio remains a true driver of the design world.

Superstudio Più

Milan Design Week April 2026: three locations, three destinies

Superstudio Più, the historic base in the Tortona District, stays a beacon for international design. It will host major installations, standalone pavilions, and an in-house curated project. While the area has faced fragmentation in recent years, efforts are in motion to rebuild synergy and reestablish Tortona as a global design hub.

Superstudio Maxi, located in the rising Barona district, will explore the connection between design, art, and architecture. It will serve as a platform for cross-cultural exchange and multidisciplinary creativity – opening up a part of the city long out from the Fuorisalone map.

Superstudio Village in Bovisa is the boldest step. Set in a revitalized industrial space near Parco La Goccia, it will focus entirely on young designers, research studios, and experimental projects. With extended hours and social zones, this space will function as a true design village – fresh, open, and highly collaborative.

A connected system

To make the Milan Design Week 2026 experience seamless, Superstudio will launch a unified registration system. A single QR code will provide access to all three venues. A dedicated transfer service is also being developed to connect the locations and invite other design players to join the network. The goal is to streamline logistics, reduce waiting times, and boost cooperation. This goes beyond Superstudio – it’s a step toward building a trusted, system-wide alliance.

Looking back to move forward

This transformation has deep roots. In 2000, Borioli and Lucchini turned a derelict factory into Superstudio Più, giving rise to the Fuorisalone movement. They gave visibility to emerging talents and planted the seeds of the Tortona Design District.

Now, Superstudio returns to that pioneering spirit. Despite a complex global context – marked by conflict and economic shifts – the company stays optimistic. Investing in new spaces like Bovisa is not only a strategic move but also a heartfelt commitment to Milan’s creative future.

The Superloft at Superstudio Più

Global vision, quality-driven

At the heart of Superstudio’s new strategy is a single principle: quality is the only way forward. Strong curation, clear identity, and meaningful partnerships are key. Ongoing collaborations with ICFF and WANTED New York will grow. Leading design schools will be involved, and one venue may become a global academic hub – showcasing student research and radical ideas during Milan Design Week 2026.

In 2026, Superstudio is not just adding square meters. It’s creating new space for imagination, collaboration, and impact. A new format. A new map. A new way to live design – at Milan Design Week 2026 and beyond.

From art and culture to design, bamboo has traced a unique path throughout the House’s history, becoming the natural protagonist of Gucci | Bamboo Encounters. Curated and designed by 2050+ and its founder Ippolito Pestellini Laparelli, the event explores various interpretations of the material through the works of contemporary designers, including a limited-edition zine by data artist Tiziana Alocci.

The exhibition took place at Milan’s Chiostri di San Simpliciano during the Milan Design Week 2025.

Taking inspiration from bamboo’s form, French artist Nathalie Du Pasquier reimagines the material in a folding screen. Entitled ‘PASSAVENTO,’ Du Pasquier designed lightweight panels to frame silk prints. Presenting a natural juxtaposition, the work contrasts the wildness of bamboo with the delicate touch of fabric.

Milan Design Week 2025 is back in Milan from April 6 to 13. As usual, Milan Design Week promises to be full of events, exhibitions, and installations, and the global design community will meet in Milan for a week.

Theme: Mondi Connessi

Mondi Connessi (Connected Worlds) is the theme of Fuorisalone 2025, a concept that promotes participatory design while celebrating the art of engagement through design and artificial intelligence.

This theme invites reflection on the crucial role of design in connecting different dimensions of our lives—bridging the natural environment with advanced technologies, cultural traditions with future innovations. It sparks meaningful discussions among professionals, envisioning significant contexts that can be summarized as follows:

  • New Dialogue Between Physical and Digital
  • Cultural Connections and Sustainability
  • Public Spaces and Inclusivity
  • Urban Mobility and Innovation

Mondi Connessi is a vision of the present that anticipates the future, where design and artificial intelligence collaborate to create a more interactive, immersive, and, above all, connected world. Milan Design Week 2025 will serve as a true laboratory of ideas, shaping the future of design—just as it always has.
